Nutrition in Addiction Recovery, Los Angeles CA

Nutrition support in addiction treatment starts with an appetite that has not worked properly in months. New Spirit Recovery employs an in-house chef who prepares breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks seven days a week at its Los Angeles residences, with all dietary restrictions and allergies accommodated.

New Spirit Recovery helped me when I was detoxing hard for about a week. The staff were kind to me the whole time. When I thought about leaving early, they helped me slow down and choose recovery instead. By discharge I was grateful I stayed, and I’m doing better now.

The staff is amazing. I was completely unable to detox on my own and find the right path. The food and facilities were amazing, and I found my way again. My mom and I go to church together again now. Thank you all so much.

Ask who actually cooks the food

Ten minutes, a few questions, and a real answer about your coverage. Someone picks up at any hour, including this one. Ask any facility whether meals are prepared on site.

From detox to discharge

Why does nutrition matter in addiction recovery?

Nutrition matters because substance use disrupts appetite, digestion and the absorption of nutrients, and because eating regularly restores the sleep and energy that early recovery depends on. Meals also supply structure to a day, which is why they are treated as programming rather than catering.

Stage 1Appetite returns

Appetite is one of the first things to come back

Substance use disrupts appetite, digestion and nutrient absorption, and stimulant use in particular suppresses eating for long stretches. Appetite returning during detox is often the first sign a body is recovering, and it usually arrives before sleep does. Nursing staff monitor intake across a detox that typically runs 7 to 10 days.

Stage 2Three meals

An in-house chef cooks three meals a day, seven days a week

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are prepared on site by an in-house chef, seven days a week. Lunch sits in the middle of the clinical day, between the morning and afternoon group sessions. Regular meals at fixed times do something a supplement cannot: they rebuild a rhythm in a day that addiction had stripped of one.

Stage 3Accommodations

Every dietary restriction is accommodated individually

All dietary restrictions and allergies are accommodated, with specialty meal preparation where it is needed. That covers medical requirements, allergies, and religious or ethical restrictions. Being fed something you can actually eat, without having to negotiate for it each time, removes a daily source of friction.

AllergiesMedical dietsSpecialty preparation
Stage 4Eating out

Eating in public is a skill that needs rehearsing

Community activities include occasional restaurant meals, along with pizza days and evenings. Sitting in a restaurant sober is a specific skill, and doing it for the first time after discharge is harder than doing it with a group while still in treatment. This is the same reasoning behind the weekend community integration emphasis.

Food supports recovery and does not manage withdrawal. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, any time. Support is available in Spanish and via ASL. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Why this one is different

Cooked on site, not delivered in trays

01

A chef works in the house

Meals are prepared on site by an in-house chef rather than brought in. Clients mention the food in reviews more often than almost anything else, which says less about cuisine than about what being properly fed signals to someone who has not looked after themselves in a long time.

02

Restrictions are handled without a negotiation

All dietary restrictions and allergies are accommodated with specialty meal preparation, covering medical, religious and ethical requirements. Removing a daily point of friction matters more in week one than it sounds, when almost everything else already feels like an obstacle.

03

Meals are treated as structure, not catering

Lunch falls between the morning and afternoon group sessions inside a six-hour clinical day. Fixed mealtimes rebuild a daily rhythm that substance use had removed, which is why nutrition sits alongside physical wellness rather than apart from it.

The path through

How is nutrition handled in addiction treatment?

Nutrition is handled as part of residential care: an in-house chef prepares three meals and snacks daily, dietary restrictions are accommodated individually, and nursing staff monitor intake during detox. Food supports recovery of sleep, energy and routine. It does not treat the substance use disorder itself.

Levels of care, described in ASAM terms. A clinical assessment determines placement.
Level of care Medical oversight Typical length Best when
Medical DetoxStart here 24-hour nursing, physician oversight 7–10 days, extending to 21 where medically necessary Withdrawal needs medical management, with nursing monitoring intake and hydration
Residential Treatment On-site clinical staff, weekly physician consultation Often part of a ~35-day course Medically stable, with three prepared meals a day inside the program
Step-down (PHP / IOP / OP) Scheduled clinical contact Varies by plan Returning to daily life with appetite, routine and cooking habits re-established

We deliver medical detox and residential treatment at our own facilities. Step-down care is arranged through a vetted network we coordinate on your behalf. As a residential addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, we keep the same clinical team with you from intake through discharge planning.

The question everyone asks first

Are meals included in the cost of rehab?

Meals are included in the residential program rather than charged separately. Most PPO plans cover medical detox and residential treatment when it is medically necessary, and food, accommodation and programming form part of that residential stay.

Coverage varies more than people expect, and is routinely better than assumed. We check your benefits for free and tell you exactly what we find, whether or not you come here.

We do not accept Medicaid, Medi-Cal, or Medicare. Cash pay is available; ask an admissions counselor what that looks like.

What we’ll tell you on the call

  • Whether your plan is active, and what type it is
  • What it covers for detox and residential treatment, and what it doesn’t
  • Your likely out-of-pocket, in a real number
  • If we’re not the right fit, who is

New Spirit Recovery is an out-of-network facility and accepts PPO plans. Verify insurance.

Yes. All dietary restrictions and allergies are accommodated with specialty meal preparation where needed, covering medical requirements, allergies, and religious or ethical restrictions. Tell admissions what you need during the intake call so it is arranged before you arrive.

Meals are prepared by an in-house chef, and nursing staff monitor intake during detox under physician oversight. If you need a registered dietitian for a specific medical condition, raise it with admissions so they can tell you what can be arranged.

That is common, and expected. Appetite returning is often the first sign a body is recovering, and it usually arrives before sleep does. Nursing staff monitor intake and hydration around the clock through a detox that typically runs 7 to 10 days.

Community activities include occasional restaurant meals, along with pizza days and evenings. Eating in a restaurant sober is a specific skill, and practicing it with a group during treatment is easier than attempting it alone for the first time after discharge.

Meals are part of the residential program rather than a separate charge. New Spirit Recovery is an out-of-network facility and accepts PPO plans, and we verify your coverage free. We do not accept Medicaid, Medi-Cal, or Medicare.

Life skills integration is a component of the daily programming, and meals are part of the structure that programming builds. What most people take away is a working appetite and a routine of eating at regular times, which is the foundation anything else is built on.
