How Much Does Rehab Cost in California?

How much does rehab cost in California? At New Spirit Recovery, 30 days of detox and residential treatment costs $50,000 to $70,000 if you are paying privately. Where you land in that range depends on which residence you stay at and whether you take a private or a shared room. Our published rates

Rehab prices by level of care

These are our private pay rehab prices in California, which apply when someone is not using insurance. Nothing below is a quote, because the length of your detox and the room you take change the total, but it is the real basis admissions work from.

New Spirit Recovery private pay rates. A clinical assessment sets the length of each stage.
What you are paying for Rate Typical length What it covers
Medical detoxStart here $2,000 per day 7 to 10 days 24-hour nursing, physician oversight, withdrawal management, comfort medication
Residential treatment $1,800 per day 3 to 4 weeks Six programming hours daily, seven days a week, weekly individual therapy minimum, the Rewired curriculum, meals prepared on site
30 day program, all in $50,000 to $70,000 About 35 days Detox and residential together. The range reflects which residence you stay at and whether your room is private or shared

These figures are for private pay. If you hold a PPO plan, what you pay is different and usually lower. Admissions establish that number on your first call.

Worked examples

Realistic price scenarios

Rates on their own are hard to picture. These three are built from the figures above, using the detox lengths our clinical team sees most often. They are illustrations, not quotes.

Illustrative private pay totals, built from a $2,000 detox day rate and a $1,800 residential day rate.
Scenario Detox Residential Indicative private pay total
Shorter detox, shared room 7 days at $2,000 23 days at $1,800 About $55,000
Typical 30 day stayMost common 7 to 10 days at $2,000 20 to 23 days at $1,800 $55,000 to $56,000
Longer detox, private room 10 days at $2,000 20 days at $1,800 Toward the upper end of the $50,000 to $70,000 range

Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal usually needs the longer detox. Your assessment sets the length, and admissions confirm the total before you admit.

How the number is built

How to estimate what you would pay with insurance

Your share is built from three figures on your own policy, applied in order. Each one reduces what is left for you to pay, and the last one caps it entirely. New Spirit Recovery bills PPO plans as an out-of-network provider, so it is your out-of-network terms that apply at every stage below.

Stage 1Plan type

Whether your plan can be billed here at all

New Spirit Recovery accepts PPO plans and bills them as an out-of-network provider. HMO and EPO policies are reviewed for a Single Case Agreement. We cannot bill Medicaid, Medi-Cal or Medicare. This is the question that decides whether the rest of the arithmetic applies to you, so it is the one admissions answer first.

PPO, billed out of networkHMO or EPO, reviewed for an SCAMedicare and Medi-Cal not billable
Stage 2Deductible

What you pay before the plan contributes anything

Your policy carries a separate out-of-network deductible, and it is usually higher than the in-network one people remember. Nothing from the plan arrives until it is met. If you have already had significant medical costs this year, part or all of it may be satisfied, which is why the date you admit can change your total.

Separate from in-networkResets each plan yearPrior spend may count
Stage 3Coinsurance

The share you keep paying after the deductible

Once the deductible is met the plan starts paying, but not all of it. Coinsurance is the percentage that stays with you, and out-of-network coinsurance runs higher than in-network. This is the figure facilities most often gloss over, and the reason we will not quote you a coverage percentage before reading your policy.

A percentage, not a fixed sumHigher out of networkApplies per day of care
Stage 4The ceiling

Your out-of-pocket maximum caps the whole thing

Every plan has an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Once your deductible and coinsurance together reach it, the plan covers the rest for that year. For a stay of a month this matters more than any other number on the page, because it is what stops a long admission from compounding. Admissions read it with you on the first call.

Included in the rate

What the daily rate covers

The rate is not a bed charge with services billed on top. Clinical care, medical oversight, food and the curriculum are inside it. That matters when comparing quotes, because a lower headline rate elsewhere often excludes the things below.

Inside the daily rate

  • 24-hour nursing during detox, with physician oversight
  • Six hours of programming a day, seven days a week
  • Weekly individual therapy as a minimum, more on clinical need
  • Psychiatric medication management by our Medical Director and Nurse Practitioner
  • The Rewired curriculum, taught nowhere else

  • Three meals a day plus snacks, cooked on site, every dietary need met
  • Weekend community activities and transport from LAX or Burbank
  • Discharge planning and aftercare coordination, started at intake

What moves the number

Why two people pay different amounts

Four things account for almost all of the difference between one client's total and another's. Admissions can tell you where you sit on each of them during the first call.

Factor 1

How long detox runs

Detox is the most expensive stage at $2,000 a day. A seven day detox and a ten day detox differ by $6,000. Substance, dose and medical history set that length, not preference.

Factor 2

Private or shared room

A private room costs more than a shared one. Some clients want the privacy, others do better with a roommate, and both options exist at our residences.

Factor 3

Which residence

We run three houses, in Encino, Tarzana and Northridge. They differ in size and room mix, and the rate follows.

Factor 4

Insurance or private pay

A PPO plan changes the arithmetic entirely. The figures on this page are private pay. With insurance, your share depends on your own policy terms.

Comparing facilities

What to ask before you pay anyone

Treatment is one of the larger purchases a family makes, often in a week, under pressure. These are the questions that expose the difference between a low headline rate and a low actual cost. Ask us the same ones.

Questions worth asking

  • Is medication billed inside the daily rate or separately?
  • How many individual therapy sessions a week, in writing?
  • Are labs, drug screens and psychiatric consults extra?
  • What happens to the price if my stay runs longer than planned?
  • Are you in network or out of network with my plan, and what does that do to my share?
  • Will you give me the expected total in writing before I admit?

Be careful with any facility that quotes a coverage percentage before reading your policy. Nobody can know your share without your deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum in front of them.

Common questions

Rehab cost FAQ

How much is rehab in California?
Rehab prices in California vary widely by facility size and staffing. At New Spirit Recovery, medical detox is $2,000 a day and residential treatment is $1,800 a day, so a 30 day program costs $50,000 to $70,000 if you pay privately. Published California averages sit lower, around $56,000 for a 30 day residential stay, because most facilities run larger censuses and lower staffing ratios than our six to twelve bed houses.
How much does inpatient rehab cost?
At New Spirit Recovery, inpatient residential treatment runs $1,800 a day, and medical detox runs $2,000 a day. A 30 day program covering both costs $50,000 to $70,000 privately, depending on the residence and whether your room is private or shared. Nationally, published averages for a 30 day inpatient program sit lower, because most facilities carry larger censuses and lower staffing ratios than ours.
How much is 2 weeks of rehab?
Two weeks usually means detox plus the start of residential. At our rates that is roughly $2,000 a day for the detox portion and $1,800 a day after it, so a fortnight lands near $27,000 privately. A clinical assessment sets the split, and two weeks is shorter than the stay we would normally recommend.
Do you need money for rehab?
Not necessarily. Most of our clients use a PPO health plan rather than paying privately. We bill PPO plans as an out-of-network provider, and what you owe depends on your deductible, coinsurance and annual out-of-pocket maximum. Clients without usable insurance can pay privately at the rates on this page.
How do people afford rehab?
Most people use insurance. A PPO plan covers medically necessary addiction treatment, and our admissions team verifies your specific benefits in real time on the first call so you know your figure before admitting. Where there is no usable insurance, treatment is paid privately and we set out the cost in full beforehand.
Does insurance cover the full cost?
That depends entirely on your policy. Your plan's deductible, coinsurance and annual out-of-pocket maximum determine your share, and because we bill out of network, out-of-network terms apply. We will not quote you a coverage percentage before reading your policy. Admissions read those figures with you and tell you the number.
Is detox charged separately from residential?
They are separate line items at different rates, $2,000 a day for detox and $1,800 a day for residential, but they are billed as one episode of care. The $50,000 to $70,000 figure covers both together across a 30 day stay.
What is not included in the price?
Clinical care, medical oversight, medication management, meals, the Rewired curriculum, weekend activities and airport transport are all inside the rate. Personal expenses, prescriptions filled outside our pharmacy arrangements and travel to Los Angeles are not.
Can I get a firm quote before I admit?
Yes. Admissions verify your insurance benefits in real time during your first call and establish your expected cost before you commit to anything. The call is free and carries no obligation to admit.
