New Spirit Recovery helped me when I was detoxing hard for about a week. The staff were kind to me the whole time. When I thought about leaving early, they helped me slow down and choose recovery instead. By discharge I was grateful I stayed, and I’m doing better now.

The staff is amazing. I was completely unable to detox on my own and find the right path. The food and facilities were amazing, and I found my way again. My mom and I go to church together again now. Thank you all so much.

Ask how movement is handled during detox

Ten minutes, a few questions, and a real answer about your coverage. Someone picks up at any hour, including this one. Nursing staff decide when a body is ready for exertion.

How the week is built

Why does exercise matter in addiction recovery?

Physical activity matters in recovery because it gives withdrawal-driven restlessness a destination, restores sleep, and rebuilds a relationship with a body most people have spent years ignoring. Movement is introduced by stage, once nursing staff judge that exertion is safe.

Stage 1During detox

The body comes first, and nursing sets the pace

Detox is not the moment for exertion. Withdrawal disturbs sleep, appetite, blood pressure and heart rate, and 24-hour nursing with physician oversight is monitoring all of it across a stay that typically runs 7 to 10 days. Movement enters when the clinical team judges the body ready for it, not before.

24-hour nursingMedical clearanceRest first
Stage 2Daily wellness

Physical wellness runs inside the daily schedule

Physical wellness is a component of the daily programming schedule, alongside step work, meditation, relapse prevention and psychoeducation. The aim is regulation rather than performance. Restlessness in early recovery is a physical symptom, and giving it somewhere to go improves sleep more reliably than most other interventions available in week two.

RestlessnessSleepRegulation not performance
Stage 3Weekends

Weekends move treatment into the community

Weekends emphasize community integration, which follows the fourth dimension of the ASAM criteria and current best practice. Outings use local Los Angeles resources including Santa Monica Pier and the Malibu beaches. Walking somewhere with a group, sober, in daylight, is a rehearsal for the thing that has to happen after discharge.

Santa Monica PierMalibu beachesASAM dimension four
Stage 4Carrying it out

What survives discharge is what was built as habit

A gym routine adopted in week three and abandoned in week six was never the point. What transfers is a body that sleeps, an appetite that works, and the experience of an afternoon spent doing something physical without a substance attached to it. That is what the program is trying to hand over.

Exercise supports recovery and does not treat withdrawal. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, any time. Support is available in Spanish and via ASL. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Why this one is different

Movement on the clinical team's timeline

01

Nursing decides when exertion is safe

A body in withdrawal is not a body ready to train. With 24-hour nursing and physician oversight through medical detox, exertion is introduced when the clinical picture supports it. That sequencing is the difference between wellness programming and a gym membership.

02

Weekends are programmed, not empty

Weekend emphasis falls on community integration, following the fourth dimension of the ASAM criteria. Outings use Santa Monica Pier, the Malibu beaches and other local resources. Six hours of programming run seven days a week, so weekends are part of treatment rather than a gap in it.

03

Food and movement are handled together

An in-house chef prepares three meals a day plus snacks, seven days a week, with all dietary restrictions accommodated. Nutrition support and physical wellness address the same recovering body, and separating them makes neither work well.

The path through

Where does fitness fit in addiction treatment?

Physical wellness is supportive programming inside residential treatment, introduced once medical staff judge exertion safe. Medical detox manages withdrawal first, therapy carries the clinical work, and movement addresses the restlessness, broken sleep and physical depletion that withdrawal leaves behind.

Levels of care, described in ASAM terms. A clinical assessment determines placement.
Level of care Medical oversight Typical length Best when
Medical DetoxStart here 24-hour nursing, physician oversight 7–10 days, extending to 21 where medically necessary Withdrawal needs medical management, and rest matters more than exertion
Residential Treatment On-site clinical staff, weekly physician consultation Often part of a ~35-day course Medically stable, with physical wellness running in the daily schedule
Step-down (PHP / IOP / OP) Scheduled clinical contact Varies by plan Returning to daily life with sleep, appetite and routine re-established

We deliver medical detox and residential treatment at our own facilities. Step-down care is arranged through a vetted network we coordinate on your behalf. As a residential addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, we keep the same clinical team with you from intake through discharge planning.

The question everyone asks first

Does insurance cover a rehab with a wellness program?

Insurance covers the residential program rather than wellness activities as a separate service. Most PPO plans cover medical detox and residential treatment when it is medically necessary, and physical wellness sits inside the daily schedule rather than carrying its own charge.

Coverage varies more than people expect, and is routinely better than assumed. We check your benefits for free and tell you exactly what we find, whether or not you come here.

We do not accept Medicaid, Medi-Cal, or Medicare. Cash pay is available; ask an admissions counselor what that looks like.

What we’ll tell you on the call

  • Whether your plan is active, and what type it is
  • What it covers for detox and residential treatment, and what it doesn’t
  • Your likely out-of-pocket, in a real number
  • If we’re not the right fit, who is

New Spirit Recovery is an out-of-network facility and accepts PPO plans. Verify insurance.

Common questions

Los Angeles fitness and wellness programming FAQ

It gives withdrawal-driven restlessness somewhere to go, helps sleep return, and rebuilds a relationship with a body that has usually been ignored for years. Restlessness in early recovery is a physical symptom, and movement addresses it more reliably than most other options available in week two.

Not usually, and not on your own schedule. Withdrawal disturbs sleep, appetite, blood pressure and heart rate, all of which nursing staff monitor around the clock during a detox that typically runs 7 to 10 days. Movement is introduced when the clinical team judges the body ready.

Physical wellness runs as a programming component in the daily schedule rather than as unsupervised gym access. Weekend community outings use local Los Angeles resources including Santa Monica Pier and the Malibu beaches. Ask admissions what the current setup is at the residence you would be admitted to.

Weekends emphasize community integration, following the fourth dimension of the ASAM criteria. Six hours of programming run seven days a week, so weekends are part of treatment rather than downtime, and outings use local recreational resources across greater Los Angeles.

No. The programming aims at regulation rather than performance, and most people arrive depleted, sleeping badly and eating erratically. Nothing is competitive, and the clinical team sets what is appropriate for each person’s physical condition.

An in-house chef prepares breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks seven days a week, with all dietary restrictions and allergies accommodated. Food and movement address the same recovering body, so nutrition support and physical wellness run together rather than as separate tracks.

Insurance covers the residential program rather than wellness activities as a separate service. New Spirit Recovery is an out-of-network facility and accepts PPO plans, and we verify your coverage free. We do not accept Medicaid, Medi-Cal, or Medicare.

A routine adopted in week three and dropped in week six was never the goal. What tends to transfer is a body that sleeps, an appetite that works, and the experience of spending an afternoon being physical without a substance attached to it.
