New spirit recovery helped me when I was detoxing hard for about a week. The staff were kind to me the whole time. After that, when I was thinking about leaving early, they helped me slow down and choose recovery instead. They made me feel better about myself and kept showing up, encouraging me to do what was best for me. By the time discharge came, I honestly loved New Spirit Recovery and I was grateful I stayed. They also helped me set up appointments for my leg issues, and I’m doing better now because they took the time to help me.

A close friend of mine recently finished their stay at New Spirit Recovery, and seeing their transformation has been incredible. Before coming here, they were struggling in ways that were hard to watch, but after completing the program, they’re like a completely new person — clear-headed, hopeful, and genuinely excited about life again.

What really stood out was how much they talked about the people there. The staff and owner didn’t just “do their job” — they truly cared. They made my friend feel understood, supported, and safe every step of the way. The program itself gave them real tools to build a better future, not just get through treatment. Even the small things, like the meals and the daily structure, made a big difference in helping them heal and rebuild their confidence.

I can honestly say this place gave my friend their life back. New Spirit Recovery goes beyond just treatment — it’s a place where real healing happens. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to see their loved one get the chance to start over for goodI’m

What Does New Spirit Recovery's LGBTQIA+ Addiction & Mental Health Treatment in Los Angeles, CA Include?

LGBTQIA+ Program Track — Ages 18+

New Spirit Recovery’s LGBTQIA+ Program serves adults requiring identity-affirming, trauma-informed addiction and mental health treatment following medical detox, active substance use, or insufficient progress at lower levels of care.

Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals face disproportionate substance use challenges driven by minority stress — the chronic psychological toll of stigma, discrimination, family rejection, and identity-based trauma. According to SAMHSA’s 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, LGB+ adults are nearly twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a substance use disorder. Among transgender individuals, rates of substance use disorder are estimated to be nearly four times higher than among cisgender individuals.

In California, where an estimated 5.8% of adults identify as LGBTQ+, access to affirming, culturally competent lgbtq community addiction treatment is not optional. It is essential. New Spirit Recovery’s lgbtq addiction treatment programs were built to meet that need.

What to Expect from the LGBTQIA+ Program

Clinical presentations served by our program include: recent detox completion, co-occurring mental health disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder) requiring daily monitoring, minority stress-driven relapse patterns, high relapse risk, polysubstance use, medication management needs exceeding outpatient capacity, and identity-related trauma requiring specialized therapeutic intervention.

Length of stay averages 30–90 days depending on level, with step-down to continued LGBTQIA+-affirming support services upon clinical stabilization. Admissions occur Monday through Sunday following comprehensive clinical assessment and insurance authorization.

What Does a Day in the LGBTQIA+ Program Look Like?

A typical day at our Encino facility includes a community opening group.

Two 90-minute morning therapeutic sessions rotate through DBT skills training, trauma processing, and psychoeducation.

A lunch break is included within programming hours.

One to two afternoon sessions cover skill application and relapse prevention.

Case management appointments are scheduled within programming hours.

What Happens Outside of LGBTQIA+ Program Hours?

Outside of program hours, clients attend LGBTQIA+-affirming recovery meetings, complete therapeutic homework, and contact on-call clinical staff for crisis support.

Who Is the LGBTQIA+ Program Appropriate For?

The LGBTQIA+ Program is appropriate for individuals who are:

  • In post-detox stabilization and require structured support
  • Actively using substances and need immediate clinical intervention
  • Have experienced failed attempts at lower levels of care
  • Living with co-occurring mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder
  • Experiencing minority stress, internalized homophobia/transphobia, or identity-based trauma
  • Facing high relapse risk factors tied to discrimination, family rejection, or social isolation
  • Requiring medication management beyond outpatient capacity
  • Managing employment or family obligations requiring flexible scheduling
  • Seeking a safe, explicitly affirming treatment environment

Why Choose New Spirit Recovery for LGBTQ Addiction Treatment and Substance Use Disorder Care?

New Spirit Recovery maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination. Multiple members of our clinical and support staff personally identify as LGBTQIA+, making this a genuine gay rehab built from lived experience rather than policy compliance. For gay addiction treatment specifically, clients work alongside people who understand their experience from the inside. Clients never need to educate their treatment team, justify their identity, or manage clinical staff discomfort.

Minority stress, the chronic psychological burden created by stigma, discrimination, microaggressions, and identity concealment faced by the sexual minority population, is a primary driver of elevated substance use rates in LGBTQIA+ populations. New Spirit Recovery’s LGBTQ addiction treatment approach directly targets minority stress as a clinical foundation. All LGBTQ addiction treatment services at this center are structured around the minority stress model. Our clinical team is specifically trained in minority stress theory and its relationship to addiction development. Treatment plans address both the substance use disorder and its identity-based root causes simultaneously, not sequentially.

The LGBTQIA+ Program delivers 3–6 hours of daily programming, 3–5 days weekly, providing therapeutic intensity approaching lgbtq residential treatment without 24-hour placement costs. Clients receive comprehensive clinical intervention while maintaining home or sober living residence. This structure prevents isolation — a documented risk factor for LGBTQIA+ individuals — while allowing clients to practice new skills in their actual living environments.

Flexible morning and evening tracks accommodate work schedules, caregiver responsibilities, and other obligations. This removes a key access barrier for LGBTQ community members who cannot pursue full residential care.

Our Nurse Practitioner conducts comprehensive evaluations within 24–72 hours of admission, addressing medication-assisted treatment options, harm reduction protocols, and co-occurring psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, all of which occur at significantly elevated rates in LGBTQIA+ populations.

Specialty group therapy delivers holistic addiction treatment for LGBTQ clients through DBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), coming-out and family rejection processing groups, internalized stigma work, and grief processing for community losses.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy curriculum rotates through eight-week cycles, teaching emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness skills. Daily skills groups reinforce techniques for managing identity-based triggers, chronic shame, anger, and interpersonal conflicts that frequently underlie LGBTQIA+ substance use patterns.

Guaranteed weekly individual therapy sessions address personal recovery barriers, identity exploration, trauma processing, and individualized treatment planning. Licensed therapists adapt approaches based on each client’s specific experiences, identity intersections, cultural background, and comfort level — ensuring no client must conform to a one-size-fits-all model.

Admissions occur Monday through Friday, eliminating dangerous wait periods when LGBTQIA+ individuals reach crisis points and are ready for treatment. Same-day admission availability when appropriate prevents motivation loss and reduces the risk of relapse while awaiting care.

A single intake covers substance use history, identity-based trauma, co-occurring mental health conditions, medication needs, and immediate safety concerns, eliminating the need for clients to re-disclose sensitive information multiple times.

Case managers coordinate housing stability, employment support, legal compliance documentation, healthcare appointment scheduling, and connections to LGBTQIA+-specific community resources throughout the program. For clients whose substance use has been compounded by housing insecurity, family estrangement, or employment discrimination — all disproportionately experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals — this practical support is inseparable from clinical recovery.

SAMHSA data shows that 92% of individuals from the LGBTQ community seeking treatment are diagnosed with a co-occurring mental health disorder including lgbtq depression, anxiety, and PTSD, compared to 78% of non-LGBTQIA+ patients. LGBTQ counseling for these conditions is integrated into every treatment plan, addressing substance use disorders and psychiatric conditions simultaneously.

Our LGBTQIA+ Addiction & Mental Health Treatment Process

Assessment & Stabilization

A comprehensive clinical evaluation at admission covers identity-related trauma history, minority stress factors, co-occurring mental health conditions, medication needs, and immediate safety concerns. Preferred name, pronouns, and personal history are documented during intake.

Treatment plans establish measurable goals for symptom stabilization and craving management. Safety planning addresses relapse prevention, crisis intervention, chosen-family emergency contacts, and minority stress trigger management. A Nurse Practitioner evaluation within 24–72 hours establishes the medication regimen for addiction treatment and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.

Skill Building & Curriculum Engagement

Daily attendance at process groups, psychoeducation sessions, DBT skills training, and specialty therapeutic groups builds the foundation of LGBTQ counseling and recovery. DBT rotates through emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. Individual therapy addresses trauma processing, internalized stigma, cognitive restructuring, chosen-family dynamics, and relapse prevention planning.

Case management coordinates housing, employment support, healthcare access, and legal documentation. Specialty groups cover CPT, ACT, coming-out processing, gender-affirming psychoeducation, and grief processing.

Skill Application & Integration

Clients apply learned techniques to group conflicts, minority stress-related cravings, and communication in family, chosen-family, and professional relationships. Relationship improvements include repaired connections, healthier boundaries with unsupportive family members, and stronger bonds within the LGBTQ recovery community.

Medication optimization establishes effective regimens for addiction medications and co-occurring psychiatric conditions. DBT homework extends skill application to real-life minority stress triggers outside programming hours.

Transition Planning & Step-Down Preparation

Aftercare planning coordinates LGBTQIA+-affirming step-down services, external therapist and psychiatrist referrals, and LGBTQ sober living connections. Step-down begins when clinical stability allows reduced programming intensity, typically after 30–90 days.

Discharge criteria include symptom stabilization, demonstrated skill application to identity-based triggers, safety plan completion, and medication regimen establishment.

LGBTQ Addiction Treatment FAQ

Answers to many common questions.

The LGBTQIA+ Program lasts 30–90 days depending on level, with programming 3–5 days weekly. Actual length of stay depends on the severity of your substance use, co-occurring condition complexity, treatment progress, and individual recovery goal achievement. Clinical assessments occur regularly to determine continued program appropriateness versus readiness to step down.

Yes. Flexible programming accommodates work schedules, shift patterns, and family caregiving responsibilities through morning and evening track options. This flexibility was intentionally designed to remove a barrier that prevents many LGBTQIA+ individuals from accessing treatment.

Program costs vary based on insurance coverage, plan benefits, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance rates. Contact us for free insurance verification to determine your exact coverage before treatment begins. Our admissions team will walk you through every cost clearly and without pressure.

Most major insurance plans cover our program when medically necessary, including all standard private insurance plans. Under California’s Mental Health Parity laws, insurance plans are required to cover mental health and substance use disorder treatment comparable to medical and surgical care. Our admissions team verifies benefits and submits authorization requests before admission.

Yes. The program provides comprehensive virtual attendance via HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms accommodating clients in remote locations or facing transportation barriers. Virtual programming includes live video group therapy, individual sessions with affirming therapists, and Nurse Practitioner evaluations. Hybrid combinations of in-person and virtual days are available based on individual circumstances.

Absolutely. All treatment is fully confidential under HIPAA. Your sexual orientation, gender identity, and all clinical information is protected. We will never disclose any aspect of your identity or treatment to anyone without your explicit written consent — including family members you may not have come out to.

Most clients step down to continued LGBTQIA+-affirming support services after completing the program, maintaining therapeutic support at reduced intensity. We coordinate external LGBTQIA+-informed therapist and psychiatrist referrals before discharge. Alumni receive lifetime access to LGBTQIA+-affirming recovery support groups and monthly family education programming.

The LGBTQIA+ Program serves any adult (18+) who identifies anywhere on the spectrum of sexual orientation or gender identity and is experiencing addiction or co-occurring mental health conditions. This includes individuals experiencing minority stress-driven substance use, identity-based trauma, family rejection, internalized stigma, or any combination of these factors alongside their addiction.

As an LGBTQ drug addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, CA, New Spirit Recovery stands apart from other LGBTQ addiction treatment centers because treatment is built on authentic inclusion, not checkbox compliance.

New Spirit Recovery’s LGBTQ addiction treatment program uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), trauma-focused therapies, and somatic therapies. All modalities are delivered by licensed therapists and selected based on the individual client’s clinical presentation and trauma history.

LGBTQ individuals experience minority stress, the chronic psychological burden of discrimination, stigma, family rejection, and identity-based trauma, at rates that elevate substance use disorder risk significantly above the general population. Standard addiction treatment programs are not designed to address sexual orientation, gender identity, or the trauma patterns specific to LGBTQIA+ experiences. LGBT addiction treatment at New Spirit Recovery integrates minority stress theory, affirming clinical relationships, and identity-informed therapy to treat the root causes of substance use. Addiction treatment for LGBTQ people here is built around clinical evidence, not assumptions.

Yes. All clinical staff at New Spirit Recovery complete training in LGBTQIA+-affirming care, minority stress theory, trauma-informed practice, and de-escalation. The clinical team is led by Sean O’Neill, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 24 years in recovery, and supported by Dr. Patrick Lockwood, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who provides 12 or more hours of weekly clinical supervision across both facilities.

Yes. LGBTQ rehab centers can treat co-occurring mental health disorders. New Spirit Recovery operates as an LGBTQ dual diagnosis treatment facility, meaning co-occurring mental health disorders are treated as a primary component of care alongside substance use, not as secondary concerns. This approach recognizes the unique challenges faced by individuals in the LGBTQ community and aims to provide comprehensive and tailored support for their recovery
