Aetna Coverage for Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Los Angeles

Commercial Aetna plans cover detox and residential treatment. Which Aetna plan you hold decides everything else. Commercial Aetna, Aetna Medicare Advantage and Aetna Better Health are three separate products with different rules. New Spirit Recovery treats members on commercial Aetna PPO plans at its residential facility in Encino, Los Angeles, and does not accept the Medicare or Medicaid products.

Three products, one brand

Which Aetna plan do you have, and why does it change the answer?

Aetna sells a commercial line, runs Medicare Advantage plans, and operates Aetna Better Health as its Medicaid business. They share a name and almost nothing else. Most published guidance about "Aetna rehab coverage" describes the commercial line only, which is why members on the other two are repeatedly told something that does not apply to them.

The three Aetna product lines, and what each means for a residential admission.
Product How to recognise it At New Spirit Recovery
Commercial AetnaThis one An employer or marketplace plan. The card carries a plan-type label, and PPO plans with an out-of-network benefit are the ones members use here. PPO plans with an out-of-network behavioral health benefit are the ones members use here.
Aetna Medicare Advantage The card names Medicare. Follows Medicare rules, including benefit periods and day counting. Not accepted. A plan with Medicare as the primary payer is declined at admission.
Aetna Better Health Aetna’s Medicaid business, operating under state Medicaid programmes. Not accepted. Medicaid pays only at facilities enrolled with the state programme.

Why this is the first question rather than a footnote.

Search for Aetna drug rehab coverage, or for how long Aetna pays for rehab, and much of what comes back is about Medicare benefit periods and day limits: 21 days, 100 days, coverage after a hospital stay. Those figures belong to Medicare and do not describe a commercial plan, which has no fixed day count at all.

A member on commercial Aetna who reads a Medicare day limit will plan around a number that does not apply to them. A member on Aetna Medicare Advantage who reads commercial guidance will expect access that their product does not provide.

New Spirit Recovery confirms the product line at the start of the first call, because two of the three answers end the conversation before a clinical assessment would be worth anyone’s time.

Levels of care

What levels of addiction treatment does commercial Aetna cover?

Commercial Aetna covers medically supervised detox and residential treatment where the ASAM Criteria are met, then steps the authorization down. New Spirit Recovery delivers both on site in Los Angeles and refers the outpatient levels to providers near the member's home.

How commercial Aetna treats each level, and how New Spirit Recovery delivers it.
Level of care How commercial Aetna treats it At New Spirit Recovery
Medical detoxOn site Precertified, reviewed against withdrawal risk and medical stability under the ASAM Criteria. Delivered on site under 24-hour nursing. Typically 7 to 10 days, extending to 21 where the clinical picture requires it.
Residential treatmentOn site Precertified, then renewed by continued-stay review. No fixed day count on a commercial plan. Delivered on site in Los Angeles, typically as part of a 35-day programme.
Partial hospitalization A separate authorization, measured in programme hours per week. Referred to an external provider.
Intensive outpatient Authorized by session count rather than by day. Referred to an external provider.
Sober living Housing rather than a medical benefit. Rarely funded. Coordinated as part of discharge planning.

Aetna's product structure, its use of the ASAM Criteria for substance use, and its adoption of LOCUS for mental health level of care in June 2021 are stated by Aetna in its published provider guidance at aetna.com. Your own figures come from your plan document. Facility details come from New Spirit Recovery programme records, and the two are stated separately throughout.

Four steps, in order

How does Aetna authorize residential addiction treatment?

Aetna applies the ASAM Criteria to substance use decisions and LOCUS to mental health level of care, before admission and again throughout the stay. The product line is confirmed first, because it decides whether the rest of the process applies at all.

Step 1Identify the plan

Confirm which Aetna product you hold

A commercial or employer plan, Aetna Medicare Advantage, and Aetna Better Health are three different products with different rules. Everything that follows depends on which one is on the card, and this is the step members most often skip.

New Spirit Recovery establishes the product line first, because two of the three end the conversation before a clinical assessment is worth anyone’s time.

Step 2Precertification

Aetna opens the review before admission

The facility submits withdrawal risk, medical and psychiatric stability, relapse history, and what a less intensive setting would fail to address. Aetna measures that against the ASAM Criteria, Third Edition, so the request has to speak in the dimensions ASAM actually assesses.

Step 3Medical necessity

A reviewer decides the level, not the diagnosis

The same substance and the same history can produce different decisions depending on what the record documents. A denial at residential level is frequently an offer of a lower level rather than a refusal of all care.

Step 4Continued stay

Authorization is renewed, never granted once

An approved admission covers a period, reviewed as it runs. No commercial Aetna plan approves a programme length up front, which is why any published day count describes somebody else’s plan.

New Spirit Recovery files each review and reports what it returned the same day.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day in English and Spanish. SAMHSA's free treatment referral helpline is 1-800-662-4357. For a medical emergency, call 911.

Detox specifically

Does New Spirit Recovery run detox for Aetna members in Los Angeles?

Commercial Aetna covers medically supervised withdrawal management when the clinical record shows it is needed, and precertification comes first. New Spirit Recovery runs detox on site in Encino rather than referring it to another facility, so the stay does not break between detox and residential care.

That continuity matters more than it sounds. A member who detoxes at one facility and transfers for residential treatment needs two authorizations, two intakes and two sets of records, and the gap between them is where people leave.

Detox here runs under 24-hour nursing with physician oversight, typically 7 to 10 days and extending toward 21 where the substance and the clinical picture require it. Residential treatment follows in the same place, usually as part of a 35-day programme.

New Spirit Recovery holds no Aetna contract. Members on a commercial PPO use the out-of-network behavioral health benefit their plan carries, and the admissions team reads that benefit from the policy before anyone travels to a rehabilitation center in Los Angeles.

What to ask Aetna before you travel

  • Which Aetna product is this plan, commercial, Medicare or Better Health?
  • Does it carry an out-of-network behavioral health benefit?
  • What is the out-of-network deductible, and how much is met?
  • What coinsurance applies to residential substance use treatment?
  • Has precertification been opened, and what does it still need?
  • Is this reviewed under ASAM, LOCUS, or both?

Questions Aetna members ask

Aetna and rehab, answered

How long will Aetna Medicare pay for rehab?
Aetna Medicare Advantage follows Medicare rules, which cap an inpatient benefit period and count days differently from a commercial plan. New Spirit Recovery does not accept Medicare, so a member whose Medicare is primary reaches covered treatment through a Medicare-enrolled facility.
Which Aetna plan do I actually have?
Check the card. A commercial or employer plan carries a plan-type label such as PPO. Aetna Medicare Advantage names Medicare. Aetna Better Health is the Medicaid product. The three carry different rules and different networks entirely.
Does Aetna cover alcohol rehab and drug rehab?
Yes. Commercial Aetna plans cover medically necessary substance use treatment, including withdrawal management and residential care, once precertification is opened. Aetna rehab coverage varies by product line rather than being uniform across the company.
What does Aetna insurance not cover?
Treatment it judges not medically necessary at the level requested, care given before precertification was opened, and services excluded by your specific plan document. Exclusions differ between a commercial plan, a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicaid plan.
How do I find detox centers that accept Aetna?
The Aetna rehab centers in its directory are the network ones, which is half the picture. Detox centers that accept Aetna also include out-of-network programmes billing the behavioral benefit. New Spirit Recovery runs medical detox on site in Encino, Los Angeles.
Is a rehab that accepts Aetna the same as one inside Aetna's network?
No. A rehab that accepts Aetna may hold a network agreement, or it may bill the plan's out-of-network behavioral benefit instead. Both are Aetna coverage, and the two produce very different cost shares for the member.
Is New Spirit Recovery in Aetna's network?
No. New Spirit Recovery holds no contract with Aetna or any other insurer. Members on commercial Aetna PPO plans use their out-of-network benefit, which the admissions team reads from the policy before anyone commits.
How long will Aetna authorize residential treatment?
In increments, extended while the clinical record supports continued stay. Aetna reviews against the ASAM Criteria rather than a fixed day count, so no length is approved in advance and each review either continues care or steps it down.
How much does rehab cost with Aetna?
Your share is the deductible you have not met plus coinsurance, capped by the out-of-pocket maximum. Those three figures come from your specific plan. New Spirit Recovery does not publish coverage percentages, because one plan's figure misstates the next.
Can I use an Aetna plan for treatment in Los Angeles if I live elsewhere?
Yes, where the plan carries an out-of-network behavioral health benefit, because that benefit follows the member rather than the state. New Spirit Recovery is in Encino and coordinates travel, including flights and airport transportation.
